Thanks Jimmy – good suggestions.
Lady Penelope – those contraptions look expensive! 🙂
Thanks Happy Strata. They look original but I could be biased! I’m not sure so I’ll just leave it. I have seen those extendable squeegees but even though I’m fourth floor, it’s actually like the fifth floor as the building is built into a hill and my unit is towards the back where the hill dips down. Not sure if something would extend that far and also how useful it would be. I’ll just have to be happy with cleaning the inside of the windows!
Can I please add to this query? Who owns the fly screens – the owner or the OC? I’m a tenant in a fourth floor building in Sydney and I would like to clean my windows and think I could do it by, relatively safely, hanging out the window to clean the other window panel but the fly screens are so old I think I’d damage them by trying to remove them. I’ve lived in this place for almost three years and the windows have never been cleaned and they are filthy so I assumed it was the owner/tenant responsibility. I have an overseas landlord and it takes months to get anything fixed so I’m reluctant to test the stability of the fly screen frames!
Hi Steve – I’d be wary of making sweeping statements. While I agree that there is definite evidence to support the legalisation of some drugs, there are other types of drugs which are incredibly destructive to those people who use them and deal in them. Without knowing what this tenant was dealing, it is difficult to make a judgement. I completely understand Susan’s concern. I hope they can sort this out quickly and reasonably and the residents can feel secure again.
I’m intrigued as to what appliances they are using in their bedrooms?!
Seriously, without meaning to be trite, have you suggested to them that they use rugs on the floor? I’ve had this problem before and laying down rugs, especially in the high-traffic areas like hallways and lounge rooms, can make a difference. I hope you find a solution soon, I can imagine how frustrating it is.
The hideous locks installed in my unit look liked this. The the cord bit dangles out when it’s unlocked.
I would have been horrified if the locks were permanent! Given I rent an apartment and I live on my own with no children, I would not have liked to be unable to open my windows fully, particularly given my living room gets to a balmy 32-33 degrees in summer and my landlord does not want to install air conditioning. My building installed their locks a few weeks back and, whilst they are ugly and stick out against the blinds, at least I can open my windows fully during summer nights.
I hope you find a company that will install the locks in way that those residents who do not have children, can still enjoy some fresh air! They’re definitely out there.
Will you keep us posted Faraway Girl – this issue is fascinating (less so for you I can imagine). Would love to know how he reacts when he realises he has to work within set boundaries. I hope you don’t have to take him to the Tribunal.
I started laughing as I read this and stopped when I realised I’m on the top floor and get up most nights for a loo stop (I drink a lot of water!) and am wondering if I’m bothering the quiet Asian family below me. They’re so quiet and polite I suspect they’d never say anything to me if they could hear me. It’s all well and good to ask a man to aim for the side of the bowl, but what about a woman? I don’t really want to be contorting my body on the royal throne in the middle of the night when I’m half asleep just so I can try to aim for the ceramic and not the water! So looking forward to the responses on this one!

10/02/2016 at 11:23 am in reply to: How much is an appropriate amount to request for a rental reduction due to serious mould issues? #24470Hi Mel – aside from Whale’s comments, I did indicate in the original post that my friend did not want to leave her current unit and that she was already paying a lot less than market rental rate. Given the reluctance to provide a rental decrease, temporary accommodation was out of the question. My friend was also concerned that once she was out, they would not let her back in given she was in month-to-month arrangement and paying so much below the market rate.
They are still fixing the problem in the building as a whole but her unit (and others) has been professionally cleaned and repainted, she received the rental reduction she asked for (although this was applied at the end of it all and not on a weekly basis – but she agreed to this (I wouldn’t have!)) and is happier in her unit now. No rental increase as yet but I suspect it will be a matter of time!
Isn’t a whirlybird one of those ventilation things attached to the roof? I’m interested to know what it is now!
That’s awful, Missy – you have my sympathy (which doesn’t help much). Good luck with your studies and hopefully you can move soon.
Hi Missy – please take this reply in the spirit it was intended (which is nothing but positive), I question your comment about not wanting to hear his music ever. It’s difficult to ascertain from your posts if he is blasting his music really loud or if the issue is compounded by having bad insulation in the shared wall. Having rented flats in Sydney for 20 years now I’ve lived in all sorts of places with all sorts of neighbours. I think to expect complete peace and quite in a such a intimate way of living is a bit unrealistic. For example, if I have no TV or music on I can hear my elderly neighbours’ TV or them talking to each other. I suspect they have hearing problems! But when my TV is on at what I consider a normal volume, I don’t hear them at all. This is acceptable to me. If they weren’t half deaf they could probably hear my Kylie CDs from time to time! I think we have to accept a certain level of noise (and odour – exotic cooking, anyone?!) intrusion from our neighbours when we live in apartment buildings.
Saying all that, there is no way that having music going all night at any volume that can be heard by your neighbours is acceptable and I feel for your plight. Especially if you don’t know how people will react when approached. I hope your issue is resolved soon and you don’t have to continue to deal with it. It’s awful when your own space is encroached on intrusively.

We had the first fact sheet from a previous post on this forum, very helpful. The landlord has apparently agreed to the reduction of $150 so all good. Just negotiating when it will start from now so my friend may need to call Tenants NSW after all!
