I’m hoping the community can offer suggestions to the following.

Our 18 block units, with only 3 owners residing there, are finally looking at installing security cameras in the garage/bin area.  There are only three of us on the SC as there are so few who turn up to meetings.

With so many tenants we are constantly having rubbish dumped anywhere and everywhere.  For example, do some work in the unit and dump the rubbish in the garage, buy a new fridge etc and dump the packing in the bin area, don’t feel like walking to the bin room, dump it at the front door or garage.

We had a problem with someone sleeping in the back area of the bin room and installed a security gate which stopped that but doesn’t stop the cardboard/mattress etc dumping there.

So it is felt the only way to go is to install motion sensor cameras in an attempt to discourage rubbish dumping, and those idiots who try to and sometimes do manage to get into the garage through the door.

We had someone come out yesterday and gave what appeared to be good advice – minimal number of cameras and siting of the hardware.  This of course now leads to who should have access to the footage.

As I said, only 3 resident owners, know one won’t do it, one is on the committee but has their own business and is sometimes hard to contact, and the other who might do it but appears to also be very busy.

Obviously we would need to add something to the by-laws to cover the cameras and who has access to content.  And of course we will have to install wi-fi to make it work.  Oh dear.

I’ve asked and had answered a similar question. It may be of interest to you in deciding how to proceed.

We didn’t proceed mainly due to the cost of installation. Good luck for your block. It seems you have some issues that need to be addressed and resolved.

Thank you very much VicRes.  Those answers pretty well confirm what I was thinking.  I’ll forward the link you gave me to the other committee and the SM.

Hi Helen, why not try opening lines of communication between the residents of your scheme instead? I doubt everybody is behaving badly, and sometimes people are not aware of the rules and don’t act intentionally? I am certain most of the residents in your building would appreciate an improvement to the current situation?

Sorry, I’ve only just seen this post.  We are currently getting quotes and now the problem is trying to compare apples with apples, not oranges.  Another post gave a link to a possible by-law which was helpful.  Then of course it raises the question of “so we have pictures of people doing the wrong thing but how do we identify the culprit?”  Somewhere I’ve read of someone using the tack of posting pictures on the noticeboard in the hope of shaming the problem causer and thereby reducing the problem.  With people too lazy to open the bin room gate to put rubbish inside a bin, dropping litter wherever they are, dumping packing material or builders rubbish inside the bin room for the OC to organise its removal, using visitor parking for the second car, not bothering to park the car all the way in the garage because of rubbish in the back, using the garage for storage and parking the car in a visitor’s spot right down to using the fire hose to wash their cars.  Any wonder we need cameras.
