I am new to strata living and my first levy payment is due but I see I must pay via DEFT which is telling me I must authorise Macquarie Bank to deduct the funds from my account- this IMO is a direct debit and I do not want to authorise this. I prefer to do the funds transfer myself.

Anyone else had this issue? I can’t fathom that people so freely give authority to a third party to deduct money from their account.

Am I legally able to pay in cash if the strata managing company will not allow me to do a funds transfer to their account thus bypassing DEFT?

I just had a look at my old levy invoice.  (We no longer use a strata manager.)

At the bottom, there is a notice about DEFT and authorising the bank to direct debit an account.  The wording is as you indicated.

Below the DEFT notice, I see a BPay biller number and code.  Is there anything like that on your invoice?  If you can see a BPay biller number and code, you can set up payments from your internet banking portal and ignore that DEFT payments paragraph.  I never authorised Macquarie Bank to take money from my account.

Hi Tina thanks for your response – perhaps Deft has changed since you used it – when I go in to make a payment it asks me to choose a payment method and the drop down arrows give add a bank account or add a credit card – when I click on add a bank account I then have to enter the account no. and bsb then I have to click the 2 boxes-

1 which says I am the owner of the bank account and

2nd says  ‘I request and authorise Macquarie Bank Ltd (DEFT) to debit amounts as nominated by my Biller (eg real estate agent or property manager) from the nominated bank account above’

This is signing away the rights for them to deduct however much they choose – I know it will 99.9% always be that they only deduct the amount I ask them to however that is not the point – no one should be made to authorise such a thing  – I am astounded that most people are just doing this without question.

I might add a few more decimal points to that – I don’t want Macquarie coming after us saying we claimed one in a thousand of their direct debit transactions were dodgy.

I looked at my recent DEFT Levy Notice. It gives a number of options of ways you can pay. It does not include setting up a Direct Debit. I simply go to my bank website and make my payments via BPay using the information on the notice.

I wonder if you are using a link to the DEFT website? That may be why you are getting the problem with Direct Debit.

I was told by someone on the weekend that NSW is #2 in the world (behind California) per capita for civil suits.
Even it that is not right but it is close then that is a very poor statistic for NSW.

A few zeros might be in-order.
