There’s an interesting conundrum in the Forum this week and it’s all about the power wielded by a single entity that owns several apartments against the collective might of the other owners.
This block is near a retirement home which has been buying into the building bit by bit and now own several units.
Resident owners are naturally concerned that the retirement home is planning to expand, even to the point of getting a majority of 75 per cent of units in the block to agree, so they can vote to demolish and build over it.
They’re not there yet but in the meantime the company is saying that, being the single largest property owner in the block, it wants several seats on the strata committee.
Suspecting that a toehold on the committee will be the first step on a slippery slope to “collective” i.e. forced sales, a Flatchatter has asked if they can make any such demand.

Alternatively, you can look at the list of “Your latest questions and answers” under the ads on the right of the page on a computer screen. Or at the bottom, after the ads and stories, on a tablet or phone.
Or you can go “old school” and go to the Forum Home Page and work your way through the topics there.
