A frankly annoying post from a new correspondent prompted a whole column in this week’s website.
To be fair, it was mostly irritating because it reminded me that some weeks ago I promised to build a glossary of strata initials and acronyms to help relative newcomers to the stratasphere.
Acronyms and initials are one of the ways we set ourselves apart from the uninitiated and gel with others in our social or professional sphere. But it doesn’t always work.
For instance, SMH doesn’t mean Sydney Morning Herald to the rest of the world; it means “shaking my head.” And FAQ doesn’t mean “Facts and Questions” – apparently a common misconception. Of course, it means “Frequently Asked Questions.”
JRTI isn’t only “just read the instructions”. Confession: I usually have an F in there, especially when I have failed to get a new piece of kit to function. Anyway, it’s also it’s the name of the booster rocket recovery barge for the Space-X mission.
You’ll find our glossary here. Let us know if we missed any initials or acronyms that have puzzled you. Which brings us into TLDR territory (“too long, didn’t read” the most dismissive of all responses).
I need to wrap this up but I still haven’t discovered what a “BUP” unit is in Queensland, from this question about who’s responsible for a leak from an exclusive use area. That’s HERE.

How to ask and answer questions
Anyone can read our posts any time but you have to be registered to ask or answer questions.
However, there are several easy ways you can search, access, ask questions and reply to others’ queries once you have registered.
The best way these days may be to click on “Forum: Your Qs & A’s” on the top menu bar on a computer screen or on the drop-down menu (three lines) on the right of the screen on phones and tablets, under the Strata Choice ad.
Then click on the topic title that interests you, and off you go.
Alternatively, you can look at the list of “Your latest questions and answers” under the ads on the right of the page on a computer screen. Or at the bottom, after the ads and stories, on a tablet or phone.
Or you can go “old school” and go to the Forum Home Page and work your way through the topics there.
Whichever route you take to get there, the best way to keep up to speed with what’s happening is to register (if you haven’t already done so), then login and subscribe for free to the topics that interest you most.
That way you’ll get an alert whenever the discussion moves forward, and you can also chip in with your own comments and questions. Have a look HERE at our instant guide to getting online.
