Hi all, I wud really appreciate some input to my issue.

I live in the gorgeous eastern burbs in an 80 apartment/studio block with a fantastic outlook.

Its all good bar how do I approach my immediate, share a partial bedroom wall neighbour.

On a regularly monotonous & continuous basis; [weekdays] 6:30-7:30am and 6:00pm-8:00pm, then 9:30pm-10:30 pm.

Weekends are a real bonanza of free time!! 6:30am onwards to 8:00am. Mid-morning: 10:00am-11:30 am. Afternoons: 2:00pm-3:30pm, more again around early evening-5:00-6:30pm, then of course we are back with the evening; 8:00PM-10-10:30 pm.

What is happening do U ask??

Well I dont exactly KNOW, [but nor do I want to actually know], I am more about how to deal with the rocking, pinging, rattling, bumping, rhythmic & frantic sets of ‘hardware’ sounds that are occuring adjacent to my bedhead!!

Luckily, human sounds are basically minor, for which I am grateful, plus I am cognisant there is 1 occupant of said apartment.

I am thinking write a really polite letter, somewhat annonymously [?] & slip it under the door..? What to say..???!

I have only been here since winter, & it appears a ‘nodding sort of acquaintance-ship’ in this building, which is kool with me. So I do not/have met this neighbour.

I am impinged & intruded upon on a too regular basis, so I am weary & a bit irritable to be woken or kept awake, impacted in an unwanted way by the happenings next door.

Close living I know & a certain amount of tolerance & patience is required, but I just wondered if anyone had some sage advice or personal experience [hahahah!] with something of this ilk….

    HELPPPPPPPPP!!Embarassed

Have you thought of knocking on their door and asking them?

      What a radical strategy Scotlandx!

But seriously folks (was this the time for frivolous posts? Methinks NO) what Suminy6 should do is call the local police station and say he/she believes it’s a brothel and ask if it’s legal or not and demand they attend about the noise AS WELL AS call his/her local council where he’ll probably be put through to the rangers eventually (if it’s like my council) and ask them if it’s a legal brothel. While doing this he/she should probably be seeking a noise abatement order.

These activities when illegal or even not can often involve criminal activity so Suminy6 should be careful.

Sorry but I don’t find this situation all that amusing Scotlandx and Very Nice Landlord.

You’re jumping to a lot of conclusions, Mortica. Did anyone say it was a brothel? Are those normal brothel times? 6.30 -7.30am? 10 – 11.30am? Maybe the person is a gym jumnkie or a personal trainer and he/she has a full set of weights and equipment.

ScotlandX was right on the money – and I didn’t think there was anything frivolous about his answer.  There’s a law of physics that says you can’t tell how the noise you are making impacts on anyone else in another place – for the simple reason you are not there.

A knock on the door (or a note under it) and a very polite inquiry along the lines of “I keep hearing strange noises at these times – do you have any idea what it might be?” could solve a lot of problems before you start involving the cops or the council.

I wasn’t being frivolous, I was deadly serious.  I have never frequented a brothel but those hours seem very odd to me, why would you think it is a brothel?  The noise could be from anything.  You could send in a swat squad and find it is a little old lady who likes banging on pipes, it happened to me a number of years ago, when a little old lady did exactly that at 6am every day, until I asked her to stop.

More generally, as someone who has been employed to solve problems of various kinds for a long time, it has been my experience that people don’t try the most obvious and simplest solution first.  When we have problems we are usually part of the solution, in that we need to take some sort of action to try and resolve the problem.  The person next door is likely not aware that they are disturbing their neighbour – knock on the door and tell them that you are being disturbed by strange noises, can they assist?  It is only if or when they refuse to assist that you then consider other options, although calling the police or Council re illegal brothels is the last thing I would do, in the absence of any clear evidence.  They have better things to do.

Totally agree with JT and scotlandx, nobody knows what happens behind closed doors, noise travels in apartment blocks and can be confusing. Why on earth would you choose the worse case scenario and possibly cause some innocent person distress? Say hi to your neighbour and ask or send a request through the SM.

To digress slightly, I have watched this space for a number of years, posted and gained much insight, received help and all thanks to JT and his devoted fans and fellow strata dwellers, negative posts are good, they are what we mostlyConfused all have in common, but I have to say recently there have been some seriously negative posters that make my experience less than pleasant. Is that the price of popularity?

I had a similar problem recently with an upstairs neighbor (a divorcee mum with a couple of uni aged kids). Sounded like they had some gym gear with things falling/dropping on the floor at regular intervals. I just mentioned casually to her when I passed her in the car park one day that I could hear these noises in the building, but not sure what they were or where they were coming from (sounds like this can actually travel in strange ways in buildings). She said she hadn’t heard them, didn’t know where they could be coming from, but I haven’t heard them since.

As for the “brothel” suggestions, I understand that in NSW one girl working from home does not constitute a brothel and is quite legal; two girls in the same premises is a different situation.

Just an update on this.  One dimwit was posting under four different names, congratulating himself on how clever he was and “ganging up” on anyone who disagreed with him (especially me). He and his various doppelgangers are no longer with us.

My apologies to all the real people on this website for not spotting this sad onanist before now.  I will be more diligent in fuiture.

                Suminy6,

Any good strata manager will first recommend to you to actually go meet your neighbour, after all at the end of the day, they will still be your neighbour and can either be a good friend or a real pain in the arse.

Scotlandx was on the money with the first post.

If your first interaction with this neighbour is a by-law letter from your strata manager, the neighborly relations will be very thin.

Great strata schemes are ones that establish themselves as a community encouraging neighbours to communicate and be part of an active community.

                Mr S
