Forum: Your thoughts on rents, pets and NCAT?

A renter relaxed about having a pet and possible rent rises - must be in Victoria!

We’re going to depart from the normal reader Q&A format this week, to try to gauge your thoughts on a number of issues.

Firstly, should we be happy or worried that the new Rentals Commissioner is targeting no-fault evictions (used to push up rents without having to convince a tribunal that the rises are fair) and pet bans on rental properties?

Is this a good thing, just bringing us into line with other states, specifically Victoria? Or has the needle swung too far in favour of renters? That’s HERE.

What do you think about an NCAT Member who removes a strata manager from two blocks and replaces them with a compulsorily appointed manager, then appoints the sacked manager to a third building, giving them absolute power?  That’s HERE.

What do you think of plans to phase gas cookers out of apartment blocks (and houses) and replace them with electric induction stoves?  Is this good for the health of humans and the planet they live on? Or is this Nanny State stuff?  That’s HERE.

And finally, from a reader, when the admin fund borrows from the sinking fund, does the money have to be paid back in 90 days, or, as the strata Act seems to suggest, there just has to be a decision of when and how to pay it back in that time limit.  That’s HERE.

Post your responses on the Flat Chat Forum or just email them to mail@flatchat.com.au and I will post them for you, anonymously, of course..

How to ask and answer questions

Anyone can read our posts anytime but you have to be registered to ask or answer questions. However, there are several easy ways you can search, access, ask questions and reply to others’ queries once you have registered.
The best way these days may be to click on “Forum: Your Qs & A’s” on the top menu bar on a computer screen or on the drop-down menu (three lines) on the right of the screen on phones and tablets, under the Strata Choice ad. Then click on the topic title that interests you, and off you go.
Alternatively, you can look at the list of “Your latest questions and answers” under the ads on the right of the page on a computer screen. Or at the bottom, after the ads and stories, on a tablet or phone.
Or you can go “old school” and go to the Forum Home Page and work your way through the topics there. Whichever route you take to get there, the best way to keep up to speed with what’s happening is to register (if you haven’t already done so), then login and subscribe for free to the topics that interest you most.
That way you’ll get an alert whenever the discussion moves forward, and you can also chip in with your own comments and questions. Have a look HERE at our instant guide to getting online.
